Kate Dobbins, born in Oakland, California in 1938, has lived on the East Coast, in Turkey, Germany, Spain; and now, again, resides in Oakland. Her working life has been eclectic: waiter, cab driver, white water rafting guide, legal summarizer, literature & writing instructor in community colleges, technical communication writer. In the 1990s, she started taking art classes at Laney College (Oakland); then, in 2009, enrolled in the San Francisco Studio School, where she studied formal aspects of painting until the end of 2010. In addition to the Impressionists, Cezanne, Matisse, Kandinsky, Guston—her work is inspired by the Society of Six and Bay Area Figurative painters.
